Serengeti plains: The best-known feature of the Serengeti is the almost treeless grassland in the south. It has koppies, granite formations that serve as observation posts for predators. The Volcanic Grasslands is an edaphic plant community that grows on soils derived from volcanic ash from nearby volcanoes.
The Great Migration
One of Serengeti’s most spectacular events is the annual wildebeest migration, involving over 1.2 million wildebeest, 750,000 zebras, and hundreds of thousands of other plains game. The migration follows seasonal rains, moving from the southern plains in December through the northern and western corridors by May, crossing rivers like the Grumeti, where many animals face predation, exhaustion, or thirst. This migration also attracts predators, creating dramatic wildlife interactions.
